Canada Airlifts 10 Tons of Humanitarian Supplies to Gaza

(MENAFN) Canada announced on Monday that it has dropped 10 tons of humanitarian supplies into Gaza, condemning Israel’s blockade of aid as a breach of international law.

In a joint statement, Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Defense Minister David McGuinty emphasized, “Canada is taking these exceptional measures with our international partners as access to humanitarian aid in Gaza is severely restricted and humanitarian needs have reached an unprecedented level.”

They underscored that despite urgent demands, delivering critical food and medical aid by land is being heavily hindered by Israeli restrictions. “Despite the scale of need, humanitarian partners face severe challenges in delivering life-saving food and medical assistance by land due to ongoing restrictions imposed by the Israeli government. This obstruction of aid is a violation of international humanitarian law and must end immediately.”

Alongside Canada, five other nations—United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Egypt, Germany, and Belgium—have also provided aid, according to an Israeli military post on X.

Canada’s statement called for urgent reforms to enhance humanitarian access in Gaza, including safe passage for aid groups, opening all border crossings, speeding up customs procedures, and granting long-term visas for aid workers.

The officials painted a grim picture of the situation on the ground in Gaza, stating the need for a “dramatic scale-up” in humanitarian assistance to address the dire conditions.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has maintained a relentless military offensive on Gaza, killing nearly 61,000 Palestinians—almost half of them women and children. This campaign has left the region devastated and on the brink of famine.

In response to these actions, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Additionally, Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military operations in the enclave.
